Over four decades of making a difference in Los Angeles.
Our Journey Since 1977
In 1977, art therapist Elda Unger saw art's potential as a healing tool. She began offering free workshops to children in foster care, creating a space where they could express themselves and find relief from the challenges they faced. Her vision laid the foundation for what Free Arts has become today.
1977
Free Arts was founded by Elda Unger and focused on art workshops in foster homes.
1980s and 1990s
Expanded partnerships with community centers and courthouses, Free Arts started reaching more children affected by abuse and other traumas.
1992
Launch of the court program at the Edmund D. Edelman Children’s Court to support children in the judicial system.
2005
Introduction of Free Arts Days, bringing art programs to underserved communities across Los Angeles reaching over 22,000 children annually before the pandemic.
2020
During the pandemic, Free Arts expanded art mediums, updated curriculum, expanded territory further, and created weekly virtual programs for children to be able to stay creative during the stay-at-home order. Though this period of time was stressful for families, Free Arts remained steadfast in its mission to provide art therapy family activities and virtual programs for youth and families in great need.
Today
TODAY, Free Arts provides art therapy programs for youth in hospitals, 30 community partnerships and, launched a wellness program to educate children on ways to combat anxiety though mindfulness art, healthy snack options and physical activity. Through our strategic plan, Free Arts will continue to grow and provide curriculum-based programs and vital support to youth and families.
A Legacy of Support
Elda’s vision lives on in everything we do. Free Arts work continues to evolve, but our commitment remains to providing children with a space where they feel valued, supported, and heard.
